Biografi Elvis Presley

Elvis Aron Presley lahir 8 Januari 1935 di Tupelo, Mississippi adalah seorang penyanyi rock 'n' roll legendaris Amerika Serikat. Elvis juga dikenal dengan "The King" dan "The King of Rock 'n' Roll". Selain penyanyi, The King adalah seorang produser musik dan aktor. Berkat lagu-lagunya yang memadukan irama rock 'n' roll dengan lagu-lagu ballad, dunia rock 'n' roll memperoleh fondasi komersial yang selanjutnya dapat dikembangkan musisi rock 'n' roll penerusnya.


Pada masa kejayaannya, konser-konser Elvis dihadiri penggemarnya (kebanyakan remaja) dalam jumlah yang sangat besar. Gaya, sifat, serta cara berpakaiannya menjadi simbol bagi musik rock 'n' roll dan banyak ditiru penggemarnya. Bahkan 4000 remaja Inggris menahbiskan Elvis sebagai raja trendsetter tata rambut sepanjang zaman.

Awal perkenalan Elvis dengan dunia rekaman di mulai saat musim panas 1953. Elvis membayar US$3,98 untuk merekam dua buah lagu di perusahaan Sun Studios sebagai hadiah ulang tahun bagi ibunya. Pendiri Sun, Sam Phillips, tertarik pada suaranya dan memanggilnya pada Juni 1954 untuk mengisi posisi penyanyi ballad yang sedang kosong.

Tahun 1956 merupakan awal karir Elvis sebagai penyanyi profesional. Tanggal 27 Januari Elvis merilis single pertamanya Heartbreak Hotel, dibawah label RCA Victor Records. Tanggal 23 Maret, RCA merilis album pertama Elvis , bertajuk: ELVIS PRESLEY.

Pada tahun yang sama, 16 November, film pertama Elvis, LOVE ME TENDER, diluncurkan. Film ini menuai banyak kritik, namun mendapat angka penjualan yang sangat baik. Secara keseluruhan Elvis tampil dalam 31 judul film.

Hasil penjualan album perdana Elvis meledak menjelang akhir 1950-an dengan hit-hitnya, antara lain All Shook Up, (Let me be your) Teddy Bear dan I Need Your Love Tonight. Meskipun demikian, banyak kritikus tidak terkesan. Selain itu, penampilan Elvis di panggung banyak menuai kritik, karena dianggap sebagai pornografi.

Bulan Desember 1957, Elvis dipanggil untuk ikut tugas militer dengan Angkatan Bersenjata AS. Ia resmi masuk Angkatan Bersenjata pada 24 Maret 1958, kemudian ditugaskan di Jerman, dan dilepastugaskan dengan hormat dua tahun kemudian.

Sekembalinya dari wajib militer, karir musiknya sempat meredup akibat "diganggu" profesi lainnya sebagai aktor dan hilangnya peranan dia dalam memilih jenis lagu yang ia mainkan. Selain itu, terjadi kebangkitan musik Britania/Inggris (British Invasion; The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, dan lain-lain).
Elvis melakukan comeback, yang sukses melalui penampilan televisi pada 3 Desember 1968 berjudul '68 Comeback Special. Karir musiknya kembali bersinar setelah ia mendapatkan kesempatan dalam acara tersebut untuk bermain dalam jalur yang paling ia sukai, rock 'n' roll.

Pada tahun berikutnya, Elvis memulai penampilan live yang laris di berbagai tempat, diawali dari Las Vegas dan berlanjut negara-negara bagian lainnya di Amerika Serikat. Antara tahun 1969 dan 1977, The King of Rock 'n' Roll tampil dalam 1.000 acara yang tiketnya terjual habis.

Akibat kecanduan obat-obat dokter seperti obat tidur, kesehatan dan penampilannya mengalami penurunan sekitar pertengahan 1970-an. The King tampil untuk terakhir kalinya dalam sebuah konser di Market Square Arena di Indianapolis, Indiana tanggal 26 Juni 1977.
Pada 16 Agustus 1977, Elvis ditemukan meninggal dunia di rumahnya di Graceland, Memphis akibat serangan jantung. Saat itu ia berusia 42 tahun. penyebab kematiannya hampir sama dengan Michael jackson yang meninggal akibat serangan jantung.

Rock and roll (sering ditulis sebagai rock 'n' roll) adalah genre musik yang berkembang di Amerika Serikat di akhir tahun 1940-an, dan mencapai puncak kepopuleran di awal tahun 1950-an. Dari Amerika Serikat, genre musik ini tersebar ke seluruh dunia. Rock and roll melahirkan berbagai macam subgenre yang secara keseluruhan dikenal sebagai musik rock.

Ciri khas rock and roll adalah pada ketukan (beat) yang biasanya dipadu dengan lirik. Rock and roll menggunakan beat yang didasarkan salah satu ritme musik blues yang disebut boogie woogie ditambah aksen backbeat yang hampir selalu diisi pukulan snare drum. Versi klasik dari rock and roll dimainkan dengan satu atau dua gitar listrik, gitar bas listrik, dan drum set. Perangkat kibor sering dimainkan sebagai alat musik tambahan. Bila dimainkan dengan dua gitar listrik, gitar listrik yang dimainkan untuk memberi melodi disebut guitar lead, sedangkan gitar untuk memberi ritme dan harmoni disebut gitar ritme. Saksofon sering dijadikan instrumen melodi pada gaya rock and roll awal tahun 1950-an, tapi digantikan perannya oleh gitar elektrik di pertengahan tahun 1950-an. Di akhir tahun 1940-an, bentuk awal rock and roll bahkan memakai piano sebagai instrumen melodi. Salah satu cikal bakal rock and roll adalah musik boogie woogie dengan piano sebagai melodi, seperti permainan musik berbagai kelompok big band yang mendominasi dunia musik Amerika dekade 1940-an. Kepopuleran rock and roll secara massal dan mendunia ternyata menimbulkan dampak sosial yang tidak terduga. Rock and roll bukan saja mempengaruhi gaya bermusik, tapi sekaligus gaya hidup, gaya berpakaian, dan bahasa. Selain sukses di dunia musik, bintang-bintang di periode awal rock and roll juga sukses di dunia film dan televisi. Elvis Presley, misalnya merupakan bintang rock and roll yang sukses sebagai bintang film dan televisi.

Istilah slang "rock and roll" sering dipakai orang berkulit hitam untuk menyebut "hubungan seks". Penyanyi wanita Trixie Smith pertama kali menggunakan istilah "rock and roll" dalam lagu "My Baby Rocks Me With One Steady Roll" yang diedarkan tahun 1922.

ASAL-USUL

Rock and roll mulai muncul sebagai gaya baru dalam bermusik di Amerika pada akhir tahun 1940-an sebagai percabangan musik country dan western produk budaya orang Amerika berkulit putih, dan musik rhythm and blues (R&B) yang merupakan produk budaya orang Afrika-Amerika. Unsur-unsur rock and roll sebenarnya sudah bisa didengar pada lagu-lagu country tahun 1930-an dan lagu-lagu blues dari tahun 1920-an. Walaupun demikian, genre musik yang baru ini tidak disebut "rock and roll" hingga di tahun 1950-an. Bentuk awal rock and roll adalah rockabilly yang memadukan unsur-unsur R&B, blues, jazz, dan dipengaruhi musik folk Appalachia serta musik gospel. Bila ditelusur lebih jauh lagi, cikal bakal musik rock and roll bisa ditemukan di daerah slum Five Points, kota New York pada pertengahan abad ke-19. Di daerah tersebut untuk pertama kalinya terjadi percampuran antara tari Afrika yang ritmis dengan musik Eropa, khususnya musik untuk tari rakyat jig asal Irlandia yang sangat melodius.

Penyanyi gospel berkulit hitam dari daerah Selatan Amerika Serikat menggunakan istilah "rocking" untuk menyebut sesuatu yang mirip dengan proses pengangkatan yang akan dialami orang yang percaya di akhir zaman. Istilah "rocking" pada akhir dekade 1940-an menjadi bermakna ganda, "menari" dan juga "seks", seperti pada lirik lagu "Good Rocking Tonight" yang dibawakan pemusik blues Roy Brown. Lagu seperti ini biasanya hanya diputar stasiun radio yang menyiarkan musik orang Afrika-Amerika dan jarang didengar kalangan orang berkulit putih.

Pada dekade 1920-an dan 1930-an, orang kulit putih di Amerika banyak menyenangi pemusik berkulit putih yang memainkan musik jazz and blues milik orang Afrika-Amerika. Musik yang sama namun bila dimainkan pemusik berkulit hitam justru sering tidak mendapat sambutan. Pemusik R&B berkulit hitam yang digemari orang berkulit putih cuma sedikit, di antaranya yang menonjol adalah Louis Jordan, Mills Brothers, dan The Ink Spots. Semasa lagu-lagu baru belum banyak diciptakan, lagu hit di awal era rock and roll banyak merupakan rekaman ulang dari lagu R&B atau blues yang sudah dikenal sebelumnya. Genre musik blues nantinya terus memberi inspirasi bagi para pemusik rock. Pemusik blues bergaya Delta blues seperti Robert Johnson dan Skip James menjadi inspirasi bagi pemusik rock Inggris The Yardbirds, Cream, dan Led Zeppelin.

Di tahun 1951, Alan Freed, seorang DJ di Cleveland, Ohio mulai memutar jenis musik yang diperkirakannya bisa disukai pendengar dari berbagai kalangan dan ras. Alan Freed disebut-sebut sebagai orang yang pertama kali menggunakan istilah "rock and roll" untuk musik R&B yang gembira dan energetik. Sewaktu bekerja sebagai DJ di stasiun radio WJW di Cleveland, Alan Freed mengadakan konser rock and roll yang pertama. Konser dilangsungkan 21 Maret 1952 dan diberi nama "The Moondog Coronation Ball". Acara dihadiri penonton yang sebagian besar orang Afrika-Amerika, tapi harus diakhiri sewaktu baru saja mulai karena penonton yang luar biasa padat. Setelah konser yang pertama sukses, Alan Freed terus mengadakan berbagai pertunjukan rock and roll yang banyak ditonton orang berkulit hitam dan berkulit putih. Pertunjukan seperti ini membantu penyebaran gaya musik Afrika-Amerika di berbagai kalangan.

Pengamat musik sering berdebat mengenai pemusik yang berhak dicatat sebagai pembuat rekaman rock and roll yang pertama. Sister Rosetta Tharpe sudah merekam musik yang penuh dengan teriakan dan hentakan di tahun 1930-an dan 1940-an. Gaya bermusiknya mirip dengan ciri khas rock and roll di pertengahan tahun 1950-an. Sister Rosetta sudah menduduki tangga lagu pop di tahun 1938 dengan lagu-lagu berirama gospel seperti "This Train" dan "Rock Me", serta dilanjutkan di tahun 1940-an dengan "Strange Things Happenin Every Day", "Up Above My Head", dan "Down By The Riverside". Pemusik lain yang menyanyikan lagu gospel/blues dengan iringan piano boogie adalah Big Joe Turner dengan "Roll 'em Pete". Lagu ini direkamnya di tahun 1939, tapi hampir-hampir tidak bisa dibedakan dengan gaya rock and roll tahun 1950-an. Artis yang merilis rekaman mirip rock and roll pada dekade 1940-an dan awal tahun 1950-an, di antaranya: Roy Brown ("Good Rocking Tonight", tahun 1947), Paul Bascomb ("Rock and Roll", 1947), Fats Domino ("The Fat Man," 1949), Big Joe Turner ("Honey, Hush", 1953, dan "Shake, Rattle and Roll", 1954), serta Les Paul and Mary Ford ("How High the Moon," 1951).

Artikel majalah Rolling Stone terbitan tahun 2004 menyatakan singel pertama Elvis Presley produksi Sun Records yang berjudul "That's All Right (Mama)" adalah rekaman rock and roll yang pertama.^[1]. Sementara itu, lagu hit "Bo Diddley" dan "I'm A Man" oleh Bo Diddley dikatakan sebagai perintis beat baru yang menghentak, serta memperkenalkan cara bermain gitar yang unik dan menjadi inspirasi bagi pemusik lain.

Lagu "Rock Around the Clock" oleh Bill Haley adalah lagu rock and roll pertama yang menduduki puncak tangga lagu majalah Billboard untuk angka penjualan dan jumlah pemutaran lagu (airplay) di radio. Bill Haley membuka pintu bagi gelombang baru kebudayaan pop yang disebut rock and roll. Pemusik-pemusik lain yang menciptakan lagu hit di periode awal rock and roll adalah Chuck Berry, Little Richard, dan kelompok vokal bergaya doo-wop. Sementara itu, di dunia musik pop berjaya para penyanyi yang sudah menjadi bintang sejak dekade sebelumnya, misalnya Eddie Fisher, Perry Como, dan Patti Page. Di periode awal rock and roll, mereka mulai menemui kesulitan menempatkan lagu-lagu pop di tangga lagu akibat terhalang lagu rock and roll.

Musik rock and roll dan boogie woogie keduanya menggunakan satu bar (birama) delapan ketuk dan sama-sama memainkan progresi kord blues 12-bar. Walaupun demikian, rock and roll lebih menekankan pada backbeat dibandingkan boogie woogie. Little Richard memadukan piano boogie-woogie dengan backbeat yang berat dan menyanyikannya dengan suara berteriak akibat terpengaruh gaya menyanyi musik gospel. Pemusik seperti Ray Charles dan Smokey Robinson memuji gaya bernyanyi Little Richard yang dikatakannya membawa warna baru dalam musik. James Brown memuji Little Richard sebagai pemusik yang pertama kali memasukkan unsur musik funk ke dalam beat rock and roll. Elvis Presley turut menyebut Little Richard sebagai sumber inspirasi. Walaupun demikian, perpaduan unsur-unsur musik seperti yang dilakukan Little Richard bukan hal yang baru. Sebelum Little Richard, sudah banyak sekali pemusik yang melakukan hal yang sama, misalnya Esquerita, Cecil Gant, Amos Milburn, Piano Red, dan Harry Gibson. Gaya liar Little Richard dalam berteriak dan menyerukan "wuuu wuuu," sebenarnya sudah digunakan Marion Williams dan banyak lagi penyanyi gospel wanita di tahun 1940-an. Roy Brown juga sudah meneriakan "yoooooww" jauh sebelum Richard melakukannya dalam lagu "Ain't No Rockin no More".

Periode awal rock and roll Amerika Utara (1953-1963)

Rock and roll muncul di saat ketegangan rasial di Amerika Serikat timbul ke permukaan. Orang Afrika-Amerika mulai memprotes segregasi rasial di sekolah dan fasilitas umum. Pada waktu itu, rock and roll yang memadukan unsur musik orang kulit putih dan unsur musik Afrika-Amerika juga tidak luput dari kecaman. Di tahun 1954, Mahkamah Agung AS menolak doktrin separate but equal (terpisah tapi sejajar) dan sejak itu dimulailah perjuangan persamaan hak orang kulit berwarna di Amerika Serikat.

Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five menyebut istilah "rock and roll" dalam versi lagu "Tamburitza Boogie" yang direkam 18 Agustus 1950 di kota New York. Sebelum Louis Jordan, pemusik lain juga sudah menggunakan istilah "rock and roll" pada rekaman mereka, misalnya "Rock and Roll Blues" yang direkam Erline Harris. Di tahun 1948, Wild Bill Moore sudah merekam lagu berjudul "Rock And Roll", begitu pula Paul Bascomb yang menggunakan judul yang sama di tahun 1947 untuk materi lagu berbeda. Di tahun 1922, Trixie Smith bahkan sudah menulis lagu berjudul "My Man Rocks Me with One Steady Roll." Di tahun 1916, kata "rock and roll" sudah disebut-sebut dalam lagu "The Camp Meeting Jubilee" yang direkam artis-artis yang bernaung di bawah label rekaman Little Wonder. Lirik lagu yang dinyanyikan para penyanyi tersebut berbunyi, "We've been rocking and rolling in your arms, in the arms of Moses".

Seorang DJ bernama Alan Freed (alias Moondog) mengadakan konser rock and roll yang pertama pada 21 Maret 1952 di Cleveland. Konser yang diberi nama "The Moondog Coronation Ball" dihadiri penonton dan pemusik tanpa mengenal perbedaan warna kulit. Konser terpaksa dibubarkan setelah baru satu lagu dibawakan di atas panggung karena situasi tidak terkendali. Ribuan penggemar berusaha mendesak masuk ke arena yang tiketnya sudah terjual habis. Konser ini membuka mata industri rekaman akan adanya minat orang kulit putih terhadap musik orang kulit hitam, dan minat ini tidak terbatas pada genre musik rhythm and blues saja. Rintangan ras dan prasangka yang masih kuat di AS ternyata tidak mampu mengatasi kekuatan ekonomi pasar. Rock and roll sukses besar di Amerika Serikat, gelombangnya terbawa Lautan Atlantik hingga ke Inggris dan melahirkan gerakan musik British Invasion pada tahun 1964.

Sejak dilahirkan pada awal dekade 1950-an hingga awal tahun 1960-an, musik rock and roll ikut melahirkan dansa gaya baru. Anak-anak muda merasakan ritme backbeat rock and roll yang tidak monoton sangat cocok untuk menghidupkan kembali dansa gaya jitterbug yang sempat populer di era big band. Demam pesta dansa rumahan dan dansa sock-hops di ruangan senam melanda remaja Amerika. Anak belasan tahun dengan setia mengikuti acara musik American Bandstand yang dibawakan Dick Clark di televisi agar bisa mengikuti gerakan dansa dan gaya busana paling mutakhir. Sejak pertengahan tahun 1960-an, istilah "rock and roll" menjadi cukup disebut "rock". Sejak itu pula secara berturut-turut muncul berbagai genre dansa, mulai dari twist, funk, disco, hingga house dan techno.

ROCK N ROLL INGGRIS

Kepopuleran genre trad jazz di Britania Raya dan Australia membawa serta pemusik blues ke Britania. Di tahun 1955, Lonnie Donegan membawakan lagu "Rock Island Line" dalam irama musik skiffle, yakni sejenis musik folk yang dipengaruhi jazz dan blues. Pemusik muda usia banyak yang tertarik dengan musik skiffle, termasuk John Lennon dan Paul McCartney. Keduanya membentuk grup musik skiffle bernama The Quarrymen pada bulan Maret 1957. Kelompok The Quarrymen selanjutnya secara bertahap berkembang menjadi The Beatles. Sebagai tandingan bagi rock and roll Amerika, musisi Inggris menciptakan musik rock and roll gaya Inggris yang selanjutnya terkenal sebagai gerakan musik British Invasion, dan Britania Raya menjadi pusat rock and roll yang baru.

Pada tahun 1958, empat remaja Inggris menjadi terkenal sebagai Cliff Richard dan the Drifters (selanjutnya berganti nama sebagai Cliff Richard and the Shadows). Grup ini mencetak hit "Move It" yang dicatat dalam sejarah sebagai singel rock 'n' roll asli Inggris yang pertama, sekaligus melahirkan genre musik baru Rock Britania (British rock). Cliff Richard memperkenalkan beberapa perubahan besar, seperti penggunaan gitar bas listrik, dan gitaris lead yang pertama (posisi gitaris diisi seorang virtuoso, Hank Marvin).

Panggung musik rock and roll Inggris berkembang dengan kehadiran Tommy Steele, Adam Faith, dan Billy Fury yang berlomba-lomba meniru bintang asal Amerika. Sebagian dari mereka menjadi populer di atas panggung berkat meniru Gene Vincent serta bintang rock and roll Amerika yang lain. Kepopuleran mereka membuat remaja Inggris rajin mengikuti perkembangan musik yang berpuncak pada Beatlemania.

Di awal dekade 1960-an, musik dansa yang dibawakan secara instrumental turut populer di Inggris. Beberapa lagu yang terkenal waktu itu misalnya: "Apache" dari The Shadows, dan "Telstar" dari The Tornados.

Sebagian besar grup musik rock yang berpengaruh dan terkenal di dunia berasal dari Britania Raya, misalnya Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, dan Queen.
